New Atelier in Kyoto

A New Sashiko Atelier and Boro Archive in Kyoto

A lot has happened at SASHIKO.LAB over the past several months, and today we are excited to share some special news. SASHIKO.LAB has moved to a new atelier near Fushimi Inari in Kyoto.

A 120-Year-Old Machiya Becomes Our New Home

Over the past eight months, we have carefully renovated a 120-year-old machiya (traditional wooden townhouse) and transformed it into a space dedicated to sashiko and Japanese textiles.

When we first found the building in October 2025, it needed extensive work. After months of renovation, it has finally become the home we had imagined.

More Than a Workshop Space

The new atelier brings together several parts of our work under one roof:

  • Sashiko workshop space
  • Shop featuring threads, fabrics, and tools
  • SASHIKO BORO ARCHIVE, our hands-on collection of vintage Japanese textiles

Visitors are welcome not only to learn sashiko but also to experience Japanese textiles in a more personal and tactile way.

About the SASHIKO BORO ARCHIVE

The SASHIKO BORO ARCHIVE is a collection of antique textiles that I have gathered over many years. Unlike a traditional museum, visitors can look closely at the fabrics and, in many cases, even touch them to study the stitching, repairs, and textures.

Each piece tells the story of the people who made, wore, repaired, and passed these textiles down through generations.
